Finally time arrived for bidding to start at the RM Sotheby’s “Driven by Disruption” auction in New York. With a final bid of 28 million dollars (25.8 million euro). the Ferrari 290 MM (chassis no. 0626) was sold. The Ferrari, which belonged to collector Pierre Bardino, is one of the rarest Ferraris with just four examples of the model in existence.
The car came to be known as “l’Indistruttibile”, because it never had a single accident during its eight year racing career. Scuderia Ferrari later sold the car to the Scuderia Temple Buell who competed the Ferrari in some of the hardest races in the Americas.
Many famous stars of the day raced the car, Juan Manuel Fangio, Phil Hill, Peter Collins, Wolfgang Von Trips, Eugenio Castellotti and Luigi Musso, Olivier Gendebien and Joakim Bonnier. Racing in the Scuderia Temple Buell colours, the car scored its most important win, victory in the Buenos Aires 1,000 Kilometres driven by Masten Gregory, Castellotti and Musso.
